“When the only fool is you, you lose every time,” is not only a brutal truth, but it’s also one of the beautiful lines carried in the chorus of Only Fool by Jeni Schapire.
The song starts off in a bare-bones fashion, with nothing for Schapire to hide behind – and thankfully she needn’t. Her voice, simple but stirring, does a marvellous job of baring the soberingly honest sentiments in the lyrics, which come across as a confrontation with the truth after the dust has settled following an argument.
However, don’t mistake Only Fool for a run-of-the-mill, stripped-back affair – after the opening section, the song takes on an almost cinematic feel as the listener is greeted by a wall of horn and string parts, which continue to build in tandem with Schapire’s rousing vocal, which carries on expressing pointed and pitch-perfect truths despite the wall of sound building around her.
