Another trap singer songwriter from Philly on the rise, Kid Travis comes through with some heartwenching trap R&B on his new single Won’t Let Me Go which dropped yesterday. It’s all about those feels, and distances itself from trap clichés by never becoming too gratuitously flashy.
An artist self-made, Kid Travis worked his way from making YouTube videos to garnering hefty streaming figures. Won’t Let Me Go is perhaps his most accomplished song to date, with a catchy, upbeat refrain juxtaposed by forlorn and soul-searching lyrics telling of a relationship where one of the two simply can’t let go.
Not shying away from pop sensibilities, the song sets its sights high using a bountiful array of sounds and dynamics. Pushing things forward with a driving, handclap-laced beat and a vocal that’s tender and self-contained. It’s an effective approach; consistent and confident, and not trying to cause an earthquake like many of his trap contemporaries.
