The sounds of contemporary jazz have always been evolving, adopted by innovative musicians the world over.
When it comes to Asia, I knew of a strong jazz scene in Tokyo, but never was I aware of any prominent one existing in South Korea. That’s changed, now I’ve heard this new, intriguing collaboration between songwriter Ki Beom Shin and soprano / lutenist Jung Min Kim.
Their track Wai is a tantalizing, darkly-shaded slice of (neo) classical jazztronica. A hidden jewel which evokes curiosity. It sounds like very little else; no cookie cutter production techniques or template arrangements, match this aesthetic with a talented pair of musicians and you have something truly distinctive.
