On his new single, London singer-songwriter Guy Baron (going under the alias Semi Precious) ruminates on insistent rhythms, bursting with minimal flourishes. It also showcases a tasteful, delicate and earnest vocal performance.
The exterior layers of Emotional Call are steeped in electronica and house, encapsulating the ideals of futurism – keep it minimal, keep it abstract. However, these stylistic qualities may be a red herring; while Baron galvanises the song in mechanisms of a new age era, ultimately his quest is to achieve a level of intimacy with the listener. The vocal is amplified by an intensely personal delivery, where his voice stays within tremblingly close proximity. It manages to sound both soothing and sad in equal measure.
Baron elaborates; “It’s about feeling lost and at the same time open for transformation, being conflicted and torn between different worlds. Sonically, I was interested in working with “euphoric”, dance music inspirations, which in this case are left suspended and fragmented, and to create a sense of spaciousness for reflection.”
