Dax – Love Hurts

Dax describes himself as a 26 year old artist who is currently making something out of nothing. Hailing from St. John’s, Canada, he’s already shown that he’s not a stranger to wearing his heart on his sleeve and filling the grooves on a record with his trademark brand of angsty rap, as proven by his previous releases of My Heart Hurts and i don’t want another sorry.
Love Hurts follows in the same vein, and carries much of the same melancholic and angry tones throughout it. Dax is on sterling form and gives a performance that is scathing and scintillating in equal measure. It’s obvious, from the title alone, that Love Hurts is about heartbreak – but delve deeper into the evocative words contained within, and you can almost taste the pain through the performance.
With bars that are so sharp you’d swear you’d cut yourself just listening to them, and phrasing and delivery so impassioned, Love Hurts is a refreshing change to a genre that seems to either fluctuate between mindless yelling and laid back triplets, these days. I would even go as far to say that it transcends being just a rap, and becomes a visceral experience.
If you’re a fan of rap that means something, and carries an emotional impact that’s on a par with golden-age Eminem and other greats of the genre, Dax is definitely worth keeping on your radar.
