Coming from a musical family, Dallas singer-songwriter M’Lynn was introduced early on to legends like Carol King, Linda Ronstadt and Stevie Wonder; certainly a great starting point for any prospective musician.
On her latest single I Got Low, there are strokes of soul and jazz throughout. No doubt, M’Lynn’s affinity for soul in her melodies is her trump card. There’s a strong contemporary mood to the track, yet at no point do proceedings feel forced, or superficial. The song has actually little in common with modern R&B’s reserved formulas. Her writing process seems rather related to Erykah Badu’s stylings of poetic expression. These are high standards indeed, but clearly M’Lynn holds herself up to them.
