IMONI – Cheap Dreams

There’s something intriguing about Essex singer-songwriter IMONI. She’s chosen to go down the unorthodox route of dark R&B, but still maintains a sweet and soulful impetus, especially when it comes to her vocal delivery. She has proven herself somewhat of an outlier on her new single Cheap Dreams – a seductive, AMSR inducing slow jam.
Instrumentally, there’s an odd but engaging twist. Glitchy minimalistic beats break and crumble over trippy synth lines. It’s brooding, (which is a word I didn’t think could be used to describe an R&B artist). Everything has a deeply textured sound and the production is basically immaculte.
Speaking on the lyrics, IMONI says, “‘Cheap Dreams’ is about the toxicity that stems from having unrealistic expectations of love and romance. It’s about the bittersweetness of seeing the world through rose-coloured glasses – which inspired my concept for the music video.”
