Aside from the hybrid of influences, the most noticeable characteristic of Cigarettes is the incredible production. Starting with a lo-fi tapped out guitar lick, we’re quickly propelled into a glow of synth pads and textured scrap kit drums, dominated by Captain Backfire’s heavy and brooding vocal. This is a truly provocative work of production, always morphing and reshaping. It’s quite a sonic experience.
The sounds culminate into a vertiginous chorus, where the song opens to reveal an even broader frame. The Captain uses the moment to put his vocal talents to work; his voice sincere and personal. He sings of jealousy, and you can tell he invests himself deeply in the performance.
Cigarettes comes out on the 12th of Feb. Keep your eyes peeled for this one as there’s no doubt this duo are going to make waves at one time or another.
