Funky duo Freedust raise the bar once again with their new single I Got Your Back; a strong musical alloy emerging out of R&B and hip hop, taken from their latest album My New Sunglasses. With a guest feature from maverick rapper Mabreeze, it’s clear we’re going to witness a blend of healthy influences at play.
The trio’s energy hits just right with Mabreeze’s flows. Instrumentation is plentiful with funky guitar chords and crafty basslines joined by chromatic honky-tonk piano, creating a thumping funk-hop crossover. In terms of creativity and originality, I Got Your Back excels. Sure, the sentiment of the track could be chalked up to New Jersey funk legends Funkadelic, but Freedust earn extra credit for not simply cruising through reworkings of old; the music here is boldly fresh and contemporary.
