Joshua Worden – Alright

It feels as though trip-hop can be somewhat underappreciated. It’s a nuanced, quietly intense aesthetic usually with a degree of heartache – and for that reason I’ve always had a fondness for it.

On his latest single Alright, Joshua Worden brings us a fresh slice of trip-hop inspired pop (though he may not refer to it himself as trip-hop, being from Atlanta) enveloped in gently yearning vocals, precise instrumentals and a splash of lush reverb. It’s a song that bares distinctive character and divulges all the best things about downtempo music. The track begins slowly over reflected stabs of piano and minimal, glitchy drums. When the vocals hit, we’re already at the chorus with its innocently simple but hypnotic refrain (“Better be cool / Better be fine”), as the piano reverse-effects, wrapping you inside like a comfort blanket.

Alright is sophisticated, but knows not to be too clever. If anything, it’s a testament to the strength of traditional music composition: simple hook, simple harmonies, slinky bass line, minimal percussion and just the right amount of ambience. Joshua understands what works. This is intuitive song writing at its best.

Highly recommended. You can listen to the track on Soundcloud and follow Joshua on Facebook for more.
