Jenny Kern – Coming Back For Me

Following various features on network TV in the US and a pre-COVID international tour, Canadian-born singer-songwriter Jenny Kern has been hitting the studio and has released the hard-hitting Coming Back for Me.

Brooding from the beginning, and with beautiful piano and sample work that epitomises the dream-pop sound without being overproduced in any shape or form, it’s a true delight to listen to, and Kern’s touching lyrics are to die for – bringing a sense of being stuck in a bit of a ‘groundhog day’, and dwelling on the feeling of abandonment as no-one is left to save you. There are some interesting production choices in Coming Back for Me – particularly where the second chorus is a tad less driving than the verse that came before it – but that does nothing to diminish the quality on show here, and each ebb and flow contributes to the emotive journey within the song.

On that note, we were particularly big fans of the brilliant build at the end of the song, where bow waves of emotion become a giant sea swells – but rather than get stuck in the deluge, the injection of energy at this point delivers a well-needed dose of hope, and reminds us that we can always find the freedom and the power we need from somewhere within ourselves.
