Trickster Figures – Beyond Me

The beauty of music is how it can magically transport us to a different place, and with Beyond Me, St. Louis indie / folk duo, Trickster Figures, appear to effortlessly conjure up feelings of being whisked away to some sort of enchanted forest.

Despite being undoubtedly minimalist, Beyond Me has a lot going for it. Armed with nothing but a ukulele, and a vocal tone that carries the slightest hint of mystery and mischief about it right at the very start, the tune begins to wake from its slumber with a beautiful breadth of vocal harmonies and a liberal sprinkling of glockenspiel, before a full-on gear change at around 1:44. This provides the slightest semblance of a shot in the arm to the piece, and while it reshapes the energy going on here somewhat, doesn’t disturb the peace and ensures that Beyond Me still is a laid-back joy to the ears.

If there’s anything wanted a little more of here, it would have been to hear the lyrics a little more clearly – but even without being able to track the lines word for word, the slightly misty vibes on show here are a delight to listen to, and we could see this piece fitting in quite well in a playlist with more local stalwarts in the Indie / Folk genre such as Westward Ho! and Minnie Birch.

You can listen to Beyond Me by Trickster Figures on your streaming platform of choice, or find out more about them on their Instagram and Bandcamp pages.
